Vancouver Washington Dog Photographer | Simon

Simon is a six year old black & tan longhair Dachshund – say that six times fast! He is my mom’s faithful companion…

Simon was and continues to be the best prescription for a broken heart. One of the most difficult times I have seen my mom go through is her divorce. When she came to live with us I knew she was more than just heartbroken, there was a multitude of feelings that I couldn’t even begin to understand.

During her stay at our house she really started to bond with our dogs, especially Amos. It was like he knew she wasn’t well and would spend time with her when she was home. One day she announced that when her house was finished that she would like to take Amos with her! I was shocked – not my baby! We told her that she could get her own,  in fact our breeder had a litter of puppies at that moment. She said that she would have to pass because she felt she wasn’t ready to deal with a puppy.

Kirk and I talked and decided that we would get her one anyway as a surprise. Several months later I had made plans to go out see the puppies. I asked my mom to go with me because we were thinking of getting a third one – my little plan was set!

When we arrived at Jeanie’s she had all the puppies out – six week old fur balls! I finally saw a warm smile come across my mom’s face. I thought to myself that this was really a good time, whether she thought so or not. Then a 12 week old puppy came romping out – a male black & tan, Simon. There was an instant bond – I asked her if she was the one I should get and she said absolutely. I told Jeanie to ‘wrap’ him up for her – my mom was shocked, a little overwhelmed, but very excited.

The drive home was a little over an hour and it was the first time in five months that she didn’t one talk about the divorce. Her mind was completely consumed on the precious furbaby that she could call her own. My thoughts were that she was smiling again, which meant she was on her way to recovery and was going to make it.

Over the ensuing months to follow it was very evident that this was the best emotional purchase that we have ever made. Simon has become the love of my mom’s life and I thank him every day for his constant companionship and his unconditional love he give her. They deserve each other in so many ways.

Ah, yes. The unconditional love and kisses of a puppy at a time you need it most. Thanks for sharing.

What an amazing and wonderful thing you and Kirk did for your mother by surprising her with Simon.
