Meeting Duncan & Arrowyn was a real treat! 1] They live outside of Portland, OR in the gorgeous country and have the life of a king and queen, naturally. 2] Their mom won the Spot Magazine cover contest!

We met Zo-Zo and her mom about seven years ago in puppy obedience school with Amos. She truly is the sweetest Dachshund you will ever meet – I don’t think she has a mean bone in her body. One of my favorite features is her soulful eyes, how can you say no to those?

Best in Show

In January I had the opportunity to spend the afternoon at the Rose City Classic Dog Show in Portland, OR. This is a pretty large regional show that is five days long. This was one of Jesse’s first show as a puppy!

See number nine? Best of breed…some people don’t like his face but I love the squareness of the jaw. Jesse and I had fun in the show ring, it was something VERY different for me and what an experience. If you have seen the movie ‘Best in Show’ the real thing does not stray far from that story line. If you haven’t seen it rent it! My favorite part of the dog show is the Jr. Handler portion. I think that the Jr. program does so much more than teach dog training. It is a perfect way for a young person to learn how to behave, communicate with adults (the judge), dress appropriately for public, confidence … when I was talking to a few of them I heard ‘thank you’ more than I would in a business meeting!

If you have a chance to watch an AKC dog show in your area be sure to make time. It’s a great way to see some unique dog breeds!

Mutt Mixer | Portland Dog Photographer

Thursday evening Kirk, Jesse and I attending the Spot Magazine Mutt Mixer at the Hotel Monaco in downtown Portland. I had been to a dog event earlier in the at this venue and was in love with the decor and the fact that they are so dog friendly! And get this…if you didn’t bring your dog with you for your stay, they will put goldfish in your room to keep you company. LOVE it!

The benefiting local rescue was Pacific NW Pit Bull Rescue and they had a white puppy there that was just adorable! Ellena Thomas who started the rescue was there to talk about advocacy and adoption of bully breed canines. I struck up a conversation with her to learn more about their organization and I couldn’t figure out where I knew her from and her the same…then we figured it out! She works at the SW Washington Humane Society where I volunteer – small world! I plan on posting more about this breed and my personal experience with them at the Humane Society.

We are happy to report that Jesse was on his best behavior. Amos is definitely our dog of choice to bring to events but with his back on the mend we didn’t want to risk it. Jesse was able to see his long time play friend Zoe and strike up a new romance with a Yorkie – she was very popular with all the male dogs!

p.s. This was my first time using my speedlight on dogs…not my favorite but I think it all worked out pretty good. Practice, practice, practice…

Meet Moe the Boxer – the first ‘child’ of my clients. In human years Moe is 77 years old, while he is an old man for his breed he is still young at heart…

When I found out that Moe wasn’t doing so well I knew I needed to go over and take his photograph. While I was there he showed me so much of himself and his life. He loves his family, especially the little kids – so patient. You also couldn’t miss the the devotion he had for his parents (and secondly peanut butter!) this shows the years of love that they have given him. One of my favorite things about Moe… he is a true gentle giant. Big as he is, he was very careful and attentive around the kids.

Personal Photography Project

I have tried to do this for so many years and have puttered out after January. In an attempt to try this again for 2010 I thought it might be easier to concentrate on ONE subject. My first choice was something immobile like my birdbath…see the picture in my header…it looks exactly like that probably 360 days out of the year – the other five days it is frozen. Pretty boring, easy and just, well BORING. I think I can take on something a little more challenging – my first thought was Amos. He loves the camera, performs on command without any incentive other than dog kisses…hmmmmm sounding a lot like my bird bath. Then Jesse saunters in. Pretty well behaved 90% of the time, active, yet does things with his own personality – kind of like a model would. The challenges of photographing Jesse are going to be invaluable lessons for me. I wanted to do a personal photography project and this fulfills that need. Jesse will be always testing my skills as a photographer… 1. always having your camera handy – whether it’s my (new) bad boy, iPhone or point&shoot. 2. metering his face, white on one side, dark on the other and bright blue eyes. 3. focus points, he has a pretty large snot so making sure what I want in focus is IN focus (I have a lot of great detail shots of Jesse’s nose!). There you have it, 365 Days of Jesse.
